Monash Sustainable Development Institute is partnering with City of Melbourne's Resilient Melbourne on a pilot project that will see high performing students help small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) understand and respond to business challenges and vulnerabilities.

The business students have been selected from the 'Future Leaders' program and 'Sustainability Practice and Organisations' course developed by MSDI for the Monash Business School.

SME consulting will be conducted by Monash students to help businesses undertake B Lab's Impact Assessment on their business. B Lab oversees the global B Corporations movement, working with businesses that commit to placing positive impact at the core of their operating models.

The pilot project will be run in conjunction with local councils and will highlight how businesses can contribute to greater social and environmental outcomes while also increasing their capability to operate in the face of adversity.

Businesses will expect to find value in participating and students will receive useful work experience, gain an understanding of the innovative B Corporation model and have the opportunity to connect directly with their local businesses and communities. In addition, local councils will be able to help improve resilience of their local SMEs and strengthen their relationship with the university sector.

The pilot project is expected to launch in September 2017.
